Quarterly Education – Why We Need to Practice More Cultural Humility

Join us as Gus Martinez takes us on a journey to learn the difference between cultural competency vs. cultural humility and why it is important to practice in our daily lives. It has never been more important to understand that with growth and complexity of multiculturalism in our society that it is key to understand cultural competency as a process rather than an end product.


Learning Objectives:

  1. We will learn the difference between cultural competency vs. cultural humility.
  2. We will understand how our biases impact the way we treat others and our decisions.
  3. We will learn how to adapt our behaviors, communication styles and become aware of power imbalances.

Meet Our Speaker 

Gus Martinez:  Born and raised in Chicago, Gus has proud Hispanic and inner-city roots. He has nearly two decades of professional experience in the hospitality and meetings industry. From selling luxury hotel properties to representing different destinations with the CVB, Gus has always been driven and people focused. In 2020, after receiving his Diversity & Inclusion certification from Cornell University he starting his DEI consulting business – GSM Diversity LLC. GSM Diversity is committed to fighting systematic racism and all forms of social injustice. Teaching clients the value and impact for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion by humanizing these topics. Focusing on the human spirit is critical as diversity is most successful when it becomes personal for staff and leadership.
